Live from MONSTERPALOOZA!
If you think your new idea or career choice is a difficult sell, try choosing marionettes as your pathway to fame and fortune! But that’s exactly what Scott Land did, and with his hilarious and topical artistry (he often creates puppet caricatures of famous celebrities and brings them to life – usually by request of the celebrity!) he has catapulted to the top of his industry – and he is here to help YOU do the same.
If Scott’s name doesn’t ring a bell, his work certainly will. His amazing skills can be found in nearly every scene of Paramount Pictures’ Team America: World Police (script by South Park writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone). His other film and television credits include Pee Wee’s Playhouse, The Ben Stiller Show, Disney’s The Princess Diaries 2, and more.
Scott has performed some 10,000 shows worldwide and is in high demand at celebrities’ private parties, usually accompanied by a purchase of an original marionette likeness. In 2006, Scott traveled to Tibet and gave a special performance for the Dalai Lama, and delighted him with an “enlightened” marionette version of his Holiness.
I caught up with Scott at the annual Monsterpalooza convention in Pasadena, California – a sort of Comic-Con for fans of special effects wizardry, particularly when it involves zombies, werewolves and rotting flesh. But the fans also love characters, and puppets are no exception. Scott was being featured as a panel expert in a discussion of the art of puppetry.
One of the things I like to find is an entrepreneur that chooses a difficult path for themselves – actors, magicians, or jugglers, for example – and hear their story of how they succeeded despite the odds or preconceived perceptions. It usually has something to do with passion, grit, and determination – attributes that can help anyone succeed in business.
For Scott Land, it is all of those things, PLUS a smart work ethic that involves having a plan. He is an inspiration, and a true mentor on how we can all do better at pulling our own strings.
